Noteshare Handbook

This notebook needs to be udpated — many improvements to Noteshare since it was written.

1. What is NoteShare?

Noteshare.io is a tool for creating and sharing online notebooks. Here are some examples:

Your Noteshare.io Account

When you sign up for Noteshare, you get a web paged linked to your screen name. Thus John Doe, who set up his account as jdoe@foo.com, has the site jdoe.my.noteshare.io. The public version of John’s site — whose content is available to his grandmother and everyone else — is jdoe.my.noteshare.io/public. That’s the web address to give to your family, fans, co-workers, students, etc.

Markup

Noteshare documents are written in Asciidoc, a markup language. "Markup" means that you add little codes to your text to structure it and shape its appearance. For example, to obtain italic text, you write _something like this_. The underscore character _ is the markup code. Boldface is done in a similar way: *Boldface*.

See the Markup 101 section of this handbook for more examples — how to make lists and charts, place hyperlinks like this article on atoms, how to place images like the one of the bird you see on the right, and even how to write mathematical formulas like \(\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}\). For still more examples, take a look at this sample document.

Technical stuff and roadmap

Noteshare.io is based on the powerful Asciidoctor text processing and rendering engine. A forthcoming update will allow you to compile a Noteshare document which you create into other formats: PDF, epub3 (electronic book), or LaTeX.

Troubleshooting

If Noteshare is not responsive, try refreshing your browser. Questions and comments to noteshare.io@gmail.com.

View Source

To compare the source and rendered text, choose Source from the View menu. This is good way to learn Asciiidoc markup — apply your natural reverse-engineernig skills.

Aside

Every Noteshare "page" has a companion page, the Aside, which you can choose to use or not. Asides can contain explanations, references, images, anything you want.

If a section of your notebook has no Aside, you won’t see anything here.

To create or edit an Aside, choose Write in the menu bar. Then in Part, choose Aside

Noteshare also offers clickable headers. They are typically rendered with blue text. Click once to reveal content, click again to hide. Go to xlink::856 to see how to make a clickable header.
