Noteshare.io documents are written in Asciidoc, a markup language. Markup means that you add little codes to the text to give it structure and shape its appearance. A program — in this case Asciidoctor — transforms what you, the author, writes into what your audience reads. You write the "source text", your fans read the "rendered text":

A fast way to learn the mark up you need is to compare the parts of the source and rendered versions of this document that are relevant to your writing. To do this, you need to be logged in so that you have access to the View menu. Just choose Source from that menu.

This sample document contains a variety of texts  —  marked up prose, verse, lists, tables, hypertext links, mathematical notation, and also images, audio, and video. See the Quick Start Guide. for more information as well as instructions on creating new documents, new sections, etc.

Type plain old prose much as you would an email. Type without regard to line endings. Put in two blank lines to start a new paragraph. That’s it!

 Note Be sure to start your paragraph at the extreme left margin. Otherwise it will be interpreted as verbatim text, as below:

Sometimes — say for avant-garde poetry for code — you want verbatim text. But usually not.

## 12. Numbering sections

To number the sections of a document, edit the notebook settings using so that the the `doc.header` element is present and looks like this (with a blank line afterwards):

To be more precise, the body of the `doc.header` must contain the line `:numbered:` If you need to update the section numbers, click the contents tool and click the renumber button.
