22. Asciidoc markup

Asciidoc markup is a system for formatting text, adding media, making hyperlinks and cross references, etc. Here is an example.

This text is bold this text is italic.

Here is what we wrote to achieve this:

This text is *bold* this text is _italic_.

Below we say more about markup. See asciidoctor.org for much more complete information.

22.1. Why Markup?

Markup goes against the prevailing ideology of WYSIWIG editing. But for authors who need to write a lot of structured text, markup has many advantages. First and foremost, you can write quickly and keep focused on what you want to express instead of breaking the flow by swtiching back and forth between keyboard, mouse, and menu. Using markup requires a small (surprisingly small) up-front investment in learning a new tool, but that investment will repay itself many times over as you write. See the section More Asciidoc Examples below to get started.

Second, markup can render text into many other formats: html (the web pages you see here), docbook, pdf, etc.

22.2. PDF

For some kinds of content, PDF is the way to go. In the New Course | Lesson | PDF menu, select PDF to create a new PDF file and attach it to a lesson.

To make a link to another VSchool lesson, all you need is its ID number. Here is a link: scientific method. It was created this way:

LITERAL::http://www.noteshare.io/lessons/999[Scientific method]

Look for the lesson ID in the upper right of the gray banner.

22.4. More Asciidoc Examples

Verse

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe

To achieve this, we wrote

....
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe
....

There are many markup codes, but you will need just a few for most of what you do.
